Quick Selection

Confirm three items before selecting a solar PV SPD

A PV SPD should not be selected by the system’s marketing label alone. Use the project’s calculated maximum string voltage, lightning protection condition and wiring configuration.

01

Maximum string voltage

Start with module Voc, modules per string and the minimum design temperature. Confirm that the selected Ucpv remains above the calculated maximum operating condition.

02

Type 2 or Type 1+2

Type 2 is commonly used for induced and switching surges. Type 1+2 is evaluated where the lightning protection design indicates that partial lightning current may enter the PV circuit.

03

Poles and protection mode

Confirm the actual DC+ / DC− / PE arrangement, cabinet wiring diagram and whether a 2-pole, 3-pole or D4 configuration is required.

Buyer pre-selection: send the module Voc, modules per string, minimum design temperature, inverter or combiner-box position, grounding arrangement, cable length, external lightning protection condition and expected quantity.

These model cards provide buyer-level pre-selection. Formal project use still requires confirmation of the latest datasheet, wiring diagram, backup protection and certificate scope.

Document boundary: certification and test-document availability depends on the exact model, voltage, SPD type, pole structure and branding configuration. Request the latest document set before project filing, tender use or OEM marking.
Application Positions

Specify PV SPDs at the equipment protection points

Prioritize the DC-side positions that protect the array circuits, combiner box and inverter input. Coordinate AC and monitoring protection separately when the project architecture requires it.

ARRAYDC entry

PV array circuits

Review exposed string routes and the point where outdoor DC conductors enter the protected electrical zone.

DC SPDPrimary point

Combiner box

Install the selected PV SPD close to the string collection circuits and match Ucpv, Type and pole configuration to the box design.

INV DCProtected load

Inverter DC input

Protect the inverter DC terminals. Long routes may require coordinated protection at the combiner box and inverter ends.

AC SPDCoordination

Inverter AC output

Select the AC-side SPD according to the distribution system, voltage, Type, poles and upstream lightning protection concept.

DATACoordination

Monitoring lines

Review RS485, meter and data-logger lines separately when outdoor or long communication cables create an additional surge path.

Cable-length check: the need for protection at one or both ends depends on the route length, zoning, grounding and project design. Confirm this before final model approval.
Procurement Risk Control

Four mistakes that cause wrong PV SPD orders

Reliable procurement depends on the complete model, not only a “40kA” label or a nominal PV system voltage.

V

Using nominal voltage only

Maximum string Voc changes with module count and temperature. Confirm Ucpv against the calculated project condition.

T

Confusing Type 2 and Type 1+2

The selection should follow the lightning protection concept and possible current path, not a preference for a higher printed rating.

P

Ignoring pole configuration

A 2P, 3P or D4 product must match the actual DC+, DC−, PE and internal cabinet wiring arrangement.

D

Assuming every certificate covers every label

Confirm the exact model, voltage, pole structure, manufacturer and branding configuration before formal document use.

Testing & Evidence

Verify components, impulse performance and thermal safety

Testing evidence should answer a purchasing risk. Equipment photos alone do not replace model-specific declarations, datasheets or certificate scope.

LEEYEE MOV and GDT component validation tester for surge protective devices

Component validation

MOV and related component checks help control the core protection elements before assembly and batch release.

LEEYEE lightning impulse generator used for SPD surge testing

Impulse testing

Declared 8/20μs and 10/350μs performance must be reviewed against the exact PV SPD type and model.

LEEYEE thermal stability test for surge protective devices

Thermal safety review

Thermal behavior and disconnection performance are important when MOV elements age or experience abnormal electrical stress.

Ask for the latest datasheet, wiring diagram, certificate copy and scope sheet for the exact PV SPD model. Do not assume that one document automatically covers every voltage, pole option or OEM label.
OEM & Project Supply

Step 1 · Review

Requirement review

Confirm voltage, Type, poles, installation position, quantity and target-market documents.

Step 2 · Match

Confirm label, packaging, manual and other agreed OEM details before production.

Step 4 · Release

Batch production and inspection

Check the agreed product identity, appearance and documentation before shipment.

Certification and test-document availability still depends on the exact model, voltage, pole structure and branding configuration.
FAQ

Solar PV SPD purchasing questions

How do I choose between a 600V, 1000V and 1500V PV SPD?

Use the calculated maximum PV string open-circuit voltage at the minimum design temperature, then confirm that the selected Ucpv, wiring configuration and project standard are suitable. Do not select only from the nominal system label.

When should I use a Type 1+2 PV SPD instead of Type 2?

Type 2 is commonly used for induced and switching surges. Type 1+2 is considered where the lightning protection design indicates that partial lightning current may enter the PV electrical system. Final selection depends on the site design, separation distance, cable routing and local requirements.

Can a 1000V PV SPD be installed in a 1500V system?

No. A 1000V product should not be assumed suitable for a 1500V circuit. The SPD voltage rating and all related parameters must match the calculated project condition.

Should the SPD be installed in the combiner box or at the inverter?

The answer depends on the cable length, system layout and protection design. Many systems require protection close to the combiner-box circuits, inverter DC input or both ends of a long route.

What information is needed for a model and quotation?

Send module Voc, modules per string, minimum design temperature, system voltage, installation position, grounding arrangement, required SPD Type, pole configuration, expected quantity and required documents.

Are CE, TÜV and CB documents available for every PV SPD?

Document availability and scope vary by exact model, voltage, pole structure and branding configuration. Request the latest model-specific file set before formal project or OEM use.
