Quick answer: how often should SPDs be inspected?

There is no single inspection interval that applies to every installation. A practical SPD maintenance schedule combines routine visual checks, planned panel inspections, an annual documented review and immediate event-triggered checks after lightning, surge alarms, backup-protection operation or electrical-system changes.

Final intervals must follow local requirements, the site risk assessment, the lightning protection inspection programme, the installed SPD manufacturer's instructions and the criticality of the protected equipment.

The schedule below is a practical preventive-maintenance framework, not a universal legal interval. High-lightning locations, remote sites, critical production lines and installations with repeated surge events may require shorter intervals.

Important testing limitation

A standard multimeter or insulation resistance test does not, by itself, prove that an SPD still has its original voltage protection level or remaining discharge capacity. Where electrical condition testing is required, follow the manufacturer's approved equipment and procedure.

Safe SPD Inspection Workflow

Internal inspection, tightening, unplugging and replacement must be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel under the site's electrical safety procedure.

1. Identify Confirm the site, panel, circuit and exact SPD model.
2. Review Check drawings, previous alarms and records.
3. Isolate Apply the approved shutdown and lockout process.
4. Inspect Complete visual, wiring and signal checks.
5. Close Replace, verify, document and replenish stock.
Do not rely on the indicator alone

An SPD showing a normal local indicator may still be incorrectly selected, poorly connected or disconnected by an open backup protective device. The indicator is one inspection point, not the complete maintenance result.

Routine Visual Inspection

Routine checks should be fast enough to include in normal electrical rounds. They should focus on conditions that can be seen or reported without disturbing an energised panel.

  • Check every pole or cartridge.
  • Record the displayed state.
  • Confirm its meaning from the instructions.
  • Photograph abnormal indications.

  • Review PLC, BMS or SCADA alarms.
  • Check the backup fuse or breaker.

  • Look for condensation and corrosion.

Quarterly or Planned Panel Inspection

“Quarterly inspection” should not automatically mean opening every panel four times each year. Select the interval from the site risk assessment and combine internal SPD inspection with planned switchboard maintenance where practical.

Mechanical and electrical connections

  • Cartridge seating and locking features.
  • Phase, neutral, DC and PE conductors.
  • Terminal condition and specified torque.
  • Backup fuse or circuit-breaker rating.

Panel and environmental condition

  • Thermal damage and discoloration.
  • Conductor length and routing.
  • Corrosion and moisture entry.
  • Remote-contact wiring security.
Do not repeatedly tighten healthy terminals

The purpose is to verify connection condition, not to apply uncontrolled additional torque during every visit. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and the site's switchboard maintenance procedure.

Annual Documented SPD Review

The annual review should confirm that the complete surge protection arrangement still matches the facility, rather than only recording that individual cartridges look normal.

Asset reconciliation

Compare the installed model and ratings with drawings, panel schedules and the approved bill of materials.

Failure trend review

Look for repeated replacements, seasonal failures and links to utility switching or lightning events.

Spare stock review

Check quantity, compatibility, storage condition, labels and lead time for critical replacement parts.

Remote alarm verification

Confirm local and remote states agree and that alarms reach the correct maintenance team.

Change management

Review transformer, generator, cable, earthing and panel changes that may affect SPD selection.

Corrective-action closure

Confirm protection is restored and the underlying cause has been addressed.

When an Immediate Post-Event Inspection Is Required

Do not wait until the next scheduled inspection when there is evidence that the installation may have experienced a significant electrical or environmental event.

Checking the SPD Indicator and Remote Signal

Always interpret the local indicator using the instructions for the exact installed model. Indicator colours and LED behaviour are not identical across all products.

The product's monitoring mechanism currently reports its normal state.

Maintenance response

Continue the remaining checklist. The indicator does not prove correct selection, wiring or full remaining capacity.

End-of-life indication

Possible meaning

The monitored component or internal disconnector has entered the manufacturer's fault state.

Replace the correct cartridge or complete SPD and investigate why it operated.

Dark or unclear indicator

Possible meaning

It may indicate loss of auxiliary power, indicator failure or another product-specific state.

Check the exact datasheet and supply condition before making a replacement decision.

Mixed pole states

Possible meaning

One protection mode may be offline while other poles still appear normal.

Treat the system as incompletely protected and replace the affected cartridge.

Remote signal verification

  1. Confirm terminal designations and contact ratings from the datasheet.
  2. Confirm the expected NO and NC states.
  3. Compare the local indicator with PLC, BMS or SCADA status.
  4. Use the approved simulated-state method where provided.
  5. Confirm the alarm identifies the correct panel.
  6. Confirm the maintenance team receives the alarm.
  7. Record the test and restore the normal condition.
Remote monitoring does not replace inspection

A dry contact cannot confirm terminal condition, PE continuity, moisture, backup fuse rating, conductor routing or enclosure damage.
