The schedule below is a practical preventive-maintenance framework, not a universal legal interval. High-lightning locations, remote sites, critical production lines and installations with repeated surge events may require shorter intervals.
Visual status check
Check visible indicators, remote alarms, backup-protection status and obvious signs of heat, moisture or physical damage during normal site rounds.

Safe SPD Inspection Workflow
Internal inspection, tightening, unplugging and replacement must be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel under the site's electrical safety procedure.
An SPD showing a normal local indicator may still be incorrectly selected, poorly connected or disconnected by an open backup protective device. The indicator is one inspection point, not the complete maintenance result.
Routine Visual Inspection
Routine checks should be fast enough to include in normal electrical rounds. They should focus on conditions that can be seen or reported without disturbing an energised panel.
Indicator status
- Check every pole or cartridge.
- Record the displayed state.
- Confirm its meaning from the instructions.
- Photograph abnormal indications.
Alarm and backup protection
